ZAPATA-ORTIZ, VICENTE, RAMIRO CASTRO DE LA MATA, ENRIQUE FERNANDEZ, ARTURO GEU, AND LUIS BATALLA. Bronchial circulation in high altitudes. Am. J. Physiol. 2 I 2 (6) : I #j41468. 1967. -Bronchial circulation and bronchopulmonary anastomoses have been studied in two groups of sheep native to the high Andes (above 4,000 m) and to the Peruvian coastal plain. The high altitude-adapted animals showed a decreased bronchial arterial flow as well as a reduction in the bronchopulmonary anastomotic flow going from the bronchial artery to the pulmonary circuit. Using indicator-dilution method, the existence of bronchopulmonary anastomotic flow from the pulmonary circuit to bronchial veins has been demonstrated in both groups of animals. The pharmacological responses of the bronchial circulation of the sheep are similar to those reported for other animal species.

High altitude exposure reduces bronchial responsiveness to hypo-osmolar aerosol in lowland asthmatics.

It is well-known that many patients with asthma undergo clinical improvement during a stay at high altitude. At high altitude, the atmospheric and climatic conditions (such as hypoxia, cold and dry air inhalation) could modify the bronchial responsiveness in asthmatics. Our study was designed to assess the difference in bronchial responsiveness to hypotonic aerosol between sea level and high al...

Effects of High-Altitude Exposure on the Pulmonary Circulation Efectos de la exposición a grandes alturas en la circulación pulmonar

More than 140 million people dwell at altitudes of over 2500 m. The Andes region is home to the greatest population density at an altitude of more than 3500 m. Equally, the number of persons living at sea level (SL) is growing, and they travel to medium, high, or extreme altitudes for occupational or scientific reasons, or to enjoy tourism or recreational activities, as is the case of hikers, m...

Electrocardiographic patterns in man at high altitudes.

Electrocardiograims of healthy men both native and long-term residents at 14,900 feet above sea level have been obtained and classified according to their dominant pattern. Most of the tracings showed signs of either right ventricular hypertrophy or right bundle-branch block, incomplete and complete. Some of the mechanisms responsible for these electrocardiographic changes found at high altitud...
